In Shadows, you’ll find that information isn’t simply handed to you; it must be sought after through your spies, NPC interactions, or by scrutinizing the world around you. Essentially, we want players to uncover our hidden gems at their own pace, using investigation, their spy network, or by keenly observing the world.

The Call for Exploration
World Map
The World Map is the backbone of exploration.
In the beginning, you’ll kick off the game with a map that shows just the names of regions and sketches suggesting the possible characteristics of important locations. As you navigate the world, more areas around your character will gradually unfold, disclosing additional details bit by bit. Each new region, sub-region, or local landmark you discover will add layers of clarity and depth to your map, meaning that the more you explore, the more information your map will reveal. Simply put, delve deeper into the world, and your map will offer you more insights.
As you explore the menu, a world map adjusts its scale, revealing various details. At the most distant view, you’ll see the names of provinces, while zooming in reveals local landmarks and relevant icons. This map serves as a crucial guide throughout your journey, helping you decide on your next destination for adventure or locating your quest objectives. It is an essential tool that will accompany you every step of the way.
In Charles’ words, as you traverse the world, keep an eye open for locations marked by question marks (or «?» icons) since there are numerous intriguing spots waiting to be discovered – from abandoned campsites to concealed sanctuaries. Our goal is to ensure that your journey remains filled with excitement and discovery.
Before diving deeper into the new elements on the map, let’s take a quick glance at other aspects first, so we can more effectively understand the overall journey of our exploration process.
Viewpoints
In Shadows, perspective or synchronization spots function somewhat differently than before in the series. Instead of disclosing vast swathes of the map with all its opportunity markers at once, climbing these spots now reveals nearby points of interest as you survey your surroundings from up high. These can include city districts, temples, shrines, castles, and many more — most of which are associated with quests or activities that you’ll likely want to participate in.
With the observe mechanic (introduced in our stealth overview article), you can manually rotate the camera within a 360-degree range to examine points of interest and mark any nearby locations you’d like to include on your compass. Previously visited spots will be labeled, while unexplored areas will show up as «unexplored locations» for future scouting. Our objective in enhancing the viewpoint function is to provide players with a more deliberate and interactive method to discover their next exciting journey.
For those who have been with us for a while, here’s some exciting news: In addition to the newly added manual camera move function, we’re bringing back our signature synchronized camera movement. This way, you can fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscapes that surround you.
Each perspective you reach grants a Fast Travel location, but be mindful when utilizing them as certain perspectives are situated within enemy strongholds, such as atop the massive, towering fortresses known as tenshus. Navigating away from these locations could prove tricky.
From both characters, various perspectives can be reached. However, the methods they employ might differ. In certain situations, Naoe has the ability to swiftly scale external structures using her grappling hook, whereas Yasuke is more likely to navigate the interior, ascending stairs and dealing with guards to get to the top.
Observe
When venturing into uncharted territories or pursuing uncharted quests, it’s crucial to focus on making detailed plans for your immediate surroundings. In Shadows, there’s no guiding Eagle to assist you; instead, you become the Eagle. To achieve this, search for a high point in the vicinity and survey the area thoroughly. Scanning with free aim will enable you to spot useful items, mark opponents, and more.
Paying close attention to your surroundings is essential when searching for your mission goals, targets, or hidden clues within a location, particularly when exploring a zone marked by your reconnaissance team. Learn more about the scouts below.
Safehouses
Discovering each region uncovers hidden shelters known as «kakurega,» which players can acquire. These kakurega serve as mini-expansions of your main base, the Hideout (your fully customizable central hub), and provide some of its useful features like restocking supplies such as rations, tools, ammunition, accessing your gear stash, managing contracts, replenishing scouts, and controlling which allies can be summoned for assistance. These spots are ideal places to pause and strategize your next action.
Obtaining hidden fast travel spots not only gives you access to quick transportation, but these spots are deemed secure because they reside far from territories under enemy control.
Player Comfort: Pathfinder
Japan boasts numerous towering, inaccessible peaks, which gives its scenery a distinct, unmatched charm. It’s often more practical to stick to roads for travel, as shortcuts that may seem tempting could actually prolong your journey. In times of uncertainty, having the Pathfinder, an optional navigation aid, can be quite beneficial, enhancing both your experience and sense of ease.
Whenever you discover or mark a quest location, whether through a scout or manually, you can activate the Pathfinder function while riding your horse. This will create a visible white line superimposed on the ground, indicating the optimal route to reach the objective or marker you’ve set. You can turn this feature on and off whenever you desire.
Objective Board
The Objective Board lies at the core of Shadows: This is a refreshed quest log where you can access your objectives and keep tabs on your progress as you navigate through the various tales of Japan, encompassing everything from local struggles and personal histories of Naoe and Yasuke to the broader narrative arc that brings our two main characters together in their mission to locate particular targets.
With each new character you come across and every fresh hurdle you face, a fresh game board unfolds before you, transporting you to different places and offering distinct narrative arcs.
In your mission, the goal map will play a crucial role in helping you find and examine your objectives. By focusing on a particular objective or character within the map, you’ll discover potential tasks — these are individual steps of the quest that you can follow and monitor separately.
In this new stage, you’ll receive hints about where each prospect lies, and it will be your task to determine where to explore or move next by linking the clues with your map. This advanced Exploration Mode is an evolution from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, aiming to give you greater control over what lies ahead in your journey.
For individuals who like to have quest indicators as a guide, placing Scouts around the suggested area will simplify things considerably.
Keep in mind that, in addition to the regular mode, we’ll offer a ‘Guided’ option which serves as an accessibility feature to help players follow their quest goals more easily.
Scouts
As you advance in the game, additional members will become part of your team, functioning as «scouts.» Having more scouts increases your chances of success; they can assist you in finding mission goals, acquiring resources to improve your Base, and even disguise your actions by resetting Provincial warnings.
In Shadows, they play a crucial part in both exploration and the battle for data, a vital component of your adventure.

Scouting the world map
When unsure about where to find a goal or opportunity, check your map and send out explorers to scout ahead, giving you a clearer idea of the location for your mission objectives. The more explorers you send at once, the larger the search area, thereby boosting your chances of success in locating what you’re seeking. Having multiple explorers can be particularly beneficial if you haven’t yet gathered all the necessary clues to pinpoint your objective, as they can help fill in the gaps of knowledge that you lack.
Cancel Provincial Alert
When your actions trigger a widespread alarm and heightened vigilance across an entire region, you’ll become a target for formidable adversaries known as the Guardians. They will pursue you relentlessly. However, before the seasons change, which occurs naturally over time, or if you choose to switch characters, you have the option to send some of your scouts to lift the regional alert. This action will soften the hostility of military patrols in the region and lower the readiness levels of guards in strategic zones.
Smuggling
Prosperous factions often safeguard their assets in fortified locations, offering potential advantages for your guild. These extensive resource reserves are so vast that a single individual, including Yasuke, couldn’t possibly carry them all away — instead, they must be identified by a marker to be slowly extracted by one of your spies over the course of a season. At the end of the season, all marked stockpiles can be exchanged for upgrades to your Hideout. Keep in mind that each resource stockpile requires one scout’s attention throughout an entire season.
Scouts Replenish
After being sent out, the scouts will come back at the end of the season and can be used again for future deployments. But if you’d like to speed up their return, you can use in-game money to do so at a kakurega. Properly managing your scouts is crucial as it significantly enhances your gameplay experience, demonstrating the immense power of having reliable allies ready to assist you whenever needed.
A World of Opportunities
As I delve into the expansive open-world of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, there’s an endless array of wonders that catch my eye. From awe-inspiring temples to grand castles, secret parkour routes hidden among the cityscape, and countless other mysteries waiting to be uncovered — this game never ceases to amaze me!
Each location you explore will aid your journey in some manner, as both Naoe and Yasuke can generally handle the tasks at hand. However, each character has distinct activities that set them apart. For instance, Naoe possesses a unique Kuji-kiri meditation practice which sharpens her mind and offers insights into her personal life and past. Meanwhile, Yasuke interacts with individuals in the world who instruct him on weapon-specific Kata — these are special techniques you can learn by executing combat moves in a specific sequence with precise timing. Additionally, Yasuke demonstrates his skills in various horse archery competitions.
