Боевая система Assassin's Creed Shadows подробно описана Ubisoft в новом обзоре игрового процесса

Hi everyone!

Shadows will be available on February 14, 2025, and we can’t wait to continue exploring its gameplay features with you. Last week, we delved into stealth mechanics, and this time around, we’ll be discussing the core concepts of the combat system in Shadows.

In this game, the character you control and the tool you wield significantly impact battles, henceforth, discover how samurai Yasuke and ninja Naoe confront adversaries and accomplish their missions.

We’ll be joined today by Charles, Shadows’ game director for additional insight.

All footage is from a work in progress build. Please note that some of the videos in this article may be compressed, which could affect their quality. Make sure to watch in 4K for the best quality. HUD setting may vary from one clip to another to showcase examples of customizable options.

Offensive Basics

Let’s kick off by summarizing the fundamental elements of Shadow’s combat mechanics. Keep in mind that the characters you pick, either Naoe or Yasuke, and your weapon selection may influence these essential foundations.

Light Attacks

As a devoted follower, I find the strikes in Shadows to be swift, smooth, and unwavering, dishing out minor yet consistent harm. Yet, certain enemy types have the ability to bulldoze through these assaults and retaliate with attacks of their own, so always stay vigilant.

Heavy Attacks

Amplifying their power, strong blows deal increased damage to the majority of foes, making it easier for you to stun or create distance.

Posture Attacks

Maintaining pressure on the attack button continuously, whether it’s light or heavy, will amplify the power of your attack, a technique referred to as a Posture Attack. This Posture Attack can be sustained indefinitely, giving you flexibility to manage distances or switch targets. Notably, all Posture Attacks are proficient at penetrating an enemy’s defense, instantly breaching their guard.

Charles mentions that quick, light strikes can be executed more swiftly than powerful, heavy ones. However, he emphasizes that well-timed, heavy attacks can deliver a substantial blow if executed correctly. Just remember, opponents will be vigilant for Power Attacks and may try to thwart your charge, so always stay alert.

Combining light, strong, and stance shifts creates a diverse range of intricate combinations, which is an effective approach.

Vulnerable State

In specific situations, like when an enemy performs a perfect dodge, they become temporarily weakened, or put into a state where they are highly susceptible to significant harm. This weakened state presents a golden chance to strike back with a powerful counterattack, either by executing a posture attack or activating an ability for the highest possible damage.

Defensive Basics

Naoe and Yasuke have several distinct methods to protect themselves. Let me share a brief overview of their individual defense techniques:

Dodge

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that when it comes to dodging incoming attacks, both Naoe and Yasuke have their unique techniques. Naoe performs directional rolls to evade, making him agile and hard to predict. On the other hand, Yasuke uses directional steps, keeping his posture upright as he moves out of harm’s way. They both react swiftly, but after Yasuke executes two consecutive directional dodge-steps, there’s a brief recovery period before he can act again, something that Naoe seems to lack.

Parry / Deflect

Yasuke and Naoe have similar defensive strategies grouped under the umbrella of parrying/deflecting, but their outcomes differ slightly. When Yasuke deflects an attack, it occurs along a straight line: if successful, the opponent is pushed back, creating an opportunity for Yasuke to retaliate. Essentially, Yasuke stands his ground and refuses to yield any territory.

Naoe’s defensive technique involves timing that is much like a parry, but instead of blocking directly in front of her, she swiftly moves to either side, dodging incoming attacks. This maneuver alters the battlefield dynamics by revealing the enemy’s vulnerable sides, yet it also leaves Naoe exposed to enemies lurking around, making constant vigilance necessary.

Block

In contrast to other characters, Yasuke’s special mechanics enable him to protect himself by retreating behind his weapon, making him invulnerable against attacks such as arrows or kunai — unless they are unstoppable attacks, which will be explained later in the text. Essentially, Charles explains that these unique nuances in attack and defense strategies make controlling each character a distinct experience, one that can be tailored to your preferred playstyle.

Skills and Abilities

Throughout your battle journey, you can pick up and hone various skills and techniques to expand your fighting arsenal. Some of these abilities can be activated during combat for increased impact, while others involve clever combinations or extensions. Additionally, there are skills that introduce fresh mechanics, demanding precise timing and strategic shifts in approach. Mastering these will catch your opponents off guard, and as they align with your advancement, they provide a continuous feeling of progress in your martial artistry.

As a gamer, I’m excited to share that your journey will involve earning Mastery Points by leveling up or vanquishing certain enemies. These points can be invested in various Mastery trees to unlock an array of weapon-related skills and abilities. This cycle lets you demonstrate your prowess against tough opponents, and in return, you’ll acquire new moves to hone your skills further.

According to Charles, active abilities are undeniably the best skills to master due to their impressive power, stylish execution, and the extra benefits they provide such as closing gaps, breaking through armor, and sometimes even restoring health.

As a gamer, I’m always thrilled to discover that I can passively upgrade my abilities without direct input, making me stronger and more efficient in battles. These hidden perks, such as faster adrenaline regeneration, increased basic health, extended time dilation for tactical advantages, and so on, are a fantastic addition to my gaming experience.

Two Protagonists

In summary, Charles explains that although both Yasuke and Naoe share the fundamental fighting mechanics, they possess distinct weapons and special abilities that give them unique identities. As a samurai and shinobi, respectively, they each bring something different to the table.

Even though Naoe exhibits exceptional skills in stealth, as we discussed earlier, she’s more than just a stealth expert when it comes to fighting. She’s swift and nimble, capable of handling a single foe with ease using her rapid-fire attacks. However, as the number of opponents escalates, she may find herself at a distinct disadvantage because she lacks armor and has limited combat resources.

On the other side, Yasuke is a resilient warrior, always prepared for intense, prolonged battles that could turn into brutal brawls. For example, the final moves in each of his combos (the finishing moves) will shatter an enemy’s defense without needing posture attacks to do so.

In the heat of battle, both characters can swap between two weapons. However, what sets Yasuke apart is his unique skill: he can exchange weapons not just during combat, but also within a combo, thanks to his link-attack ability. This allows him to seamlessly blend attacks and weapon abilities into one uninterrupted sequence.

According to Charles, Yasuke possesses some extraordinary samurai techniques hidden within him. One such technique is the Sheathed Posture Attack, where he readies a powerful opening strike while his sword remains sheathed. This move not only has a distinctive appearance but also catches most opponents off guard when timed correctly as they often fail to anticipate an attack from a drawn sword.

Weapons

The main characters possess distinct arsenals of weapons, each with its own special skills. For instance, Naoe’s weapons provide opportunities for covert maneuvers, whereas Yasuke’s equipments offer diverse tactics during conflicts.

Here’s a look at each of their weapon types:

Naoe

Katana

Naoe’s sword, the katana, is both agile and adaptable; it strikes a fine balance between speed, power, and defense. Precisely timed blows can momentarily stun opponents, creating opportunities for follow-up attacks focused on their posture. The Katana grants the ability to covertly eliminate enemies even through shoji doors.

Kusarigama

Naoe’s top choice for managing crowds is the formidable Kusarigama. This weapon boasts an extendable chain-and-ball that allows it to strike enemies from a distance and repel multiple foes simultaneously. Meanwhile, its scythe provides a close call for any single enemy it encounters. The Kusarigama enables Naoe to perform a Rush Assassination on enemies up to 10 meters distant.

Tanto & Hidden Blade

As a devotee of the art, I’m thrilled to see the stealthy Hidden Blade making its comeback, partnered with the swift Tanto dagger. With its whirling slices and lightning-quick thrusts, it becomes the perfect tool for the dance of strike-and-evade, a deadly game of a thousand cuts. The harmonious duo of Tanto and Hidden Blade grants me the power to execute lethal Double Assassinations.

Yasuke

Long Katana

As a devoted admirer, I must say that the legendary samurai weapon, scaled to fit Yasuke’s stature, strikes me as nothing short of versatile and perfectly balanced. In combat, it proves equally effective in offense and defense — making it an exceptional pick for one-on-one duels or even amidst the chaos of a massive skirmish.

Naginata

At more than two meters long and equipped with a sharp, pointed blade, Yasuke prefers to wield the Naginata in managing crowds. This weapon excels not only in keeping foes at a distance but also in inflicting harm on numerous adversaries encircling you.

Kanabo

Yasuke’s most lethal and weighty weapon, the kanabo, possesses a unique ability to penetrate enemy defenses and shatter armor with minimal impact. However, this destructive power comes at a cost: speed and maneuverability. For those wielding the kanabo, mastering timing will be crucial.

Yumi Bow

With the remarkable Yumi Bow of Japan, Yasuke can ambush unaware adversaries at a considerable distance, striking them accurately and fatally. The diverse selection of arrows provides numerous tactical options, and improving precision enhances its effectiveness.

Teppo Rifle

The Teppo flint rifle boasts both immense destructive force and high lethality. Its raw power extends its reach beyond the bow, while it also excels in piercing heavy armor — however, it has a relatively slow firing speed and reload time. In other words, the Teppo is an effective choice when you’re prepared to draw attention to yourself.

Getting proficient with a weapon requires patience and commitment. In the game Shadows, players amass experience during battles, which they convert into Mastery points. These points can then be invested in preferred weapon types, granting access to fresh skills and capabilities.

Know Your Enemy

As you venture deeper into Japan, Charles explains that the enemies you’ll face will become increasingly powerful and challenging. Each one possesses unique skills and strategies designed to test various aspects of your combat expertise.

As a seasoned gamer, I can tell you that the foes in Shadows come in all shapes and sizes. To make it easier to understand, let me break them down into a few main categories:

Outlaws

Lawless individuals often exploit vulnerable people, and while their fighting skills may be limited, they compensate by employing unconventional strategies. Keep a safe distance from their enforcers, as they can still inflict significant harm.

Ashigaru Soldiers

As a gamer, I find myself often playing as the common soldiers, or Ashigaru, in our feudal Japan-themed game. We’re the conscripts and volunteers who make up the majority of any clan’s forces. Armed with basic weapons, we employ traditional battle tactics. Interestingly, we’re more combative towards Naoe, and there’s a palpable fear among us when Yasuke is mentioned.

Ronin

Roaming swordsmen, often known as Ronin, are typically found in the service of Naoe and Yasuke’s adversaries. These roads are where they wander, ready to strike if they recognize you. Despite their unkempt appearances, former samurai themselves, the Ronin are highly skilled and their disorganized looks can be misleading.

Samurai

Skilled and formidable warriors, adept in battle, samurai possess a diverse array of weaponry, ranging from their reliable katana to the powerful kanabo. They also don an impressive assortment of armor sets, even some top-tier End-Game ones, and they are capable of executing a surprising number of offensive and defensive maneuvers during combat.

If given the chance to surprise them, a shinobi could easily outmatch a samurai. However, once they suspect danger is near, their heightened alertness and combat awareness transform them into challenging adversaries.

Samurai Daisho

Descendants of the samurai lineage, Daisho are adversaries exclusive to fortified military strongholds. Their fighting styles, an intricate blend of various martial arts, make them formidable opponents on their own. The prospect of encountering multiple such combatants is a daunting challenge indeed.

In the game, Samurai Daisho serve as a key to unlocking some of its most valuable rewards, making them definitely worth investing your time and energy.

Guardians

A select band of fearsome samurai, known as the Guardians, serve as backup forces when an alarm is triggered in any particular province. Their distinctive white hair and masks make them instantly recognizable, while they strive to instill terror in their adversaries. In the realm of Shadows, the combats against these Guardians are among the most challenging you may encounter.

Study Their Tactics

Understanding the strategies and moves of your opponents will help you take control in any scenario, as this article provides an overview of the elements and hurdles you may encounter while playing Shadows.

Flurry Attacks

In these aggressive assaults, there’s a noticeable blue sparkle on the adversary’s weapon. Unlike regular attacks, flurries continue regardless of whether you successfully block, parry, deflect or dodge them. The subsequent strike in the series will still reach you, regardless of your evasive actions.

Skilled combatants might strive to block or dodge every consecutive strike in order to expose the enemy’s weak point, yet simply blocking or dodging the final hit alone won’t suffice; it is crucial to handle the entire series of attacks to force your opponent onto the defensive.

Unstoppable Attacks

Distinctive red reflections on the foe’s weapon signify relentless assaults, which are powerful and swift. It is advisable to evade these attacks when possible. If blocking, parrying, or deflecting an unyielding attack becomes necessary, know that it will disperse some of its force, but your character’s defense will weaken, making them vulnerable to subsequent attacks.

Experienced gamers might consider adjusting their dodge timings precisely, as performing a flawless dodge during an invincible assault could cause the opponent to enter a weakened or defenseless state.

Watch some of these enemy attacks in action.

Defensive Actions

During an assault, adversaries possess several options to try and turn the tide of battle. These actions, known as defensive maneuvers, range from a straightforward retreat to dodge a single strike, up to astonishingly swift, relentless counterattacks that test your courage.

In most battles where multiple opponents are engaged, they tend to rely on their numbers, assuming that sheer force will overpower you. However, in a single combat with an exceptionally skilled adversary, defensive maneuvers become frequent and persistent, forcing you to adapt your offense by varying attacks and making full use of the skills you’ve acquired throughout your journey.

This concludes our update for this week! In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you’ll encounter numerous chances to showcase your combat skills. Look forward to stealthy ambushes in the environment, participating in fight tournaments, or challenging renowned adversaries. We eagerly anticipate your immersion into the game’s rich system, available on February 14th!
