Carve Power into Reality with Runes of Aldur League
A new league feature lets players learn Ezomyte Runesmithing from Farrow, a young blacksmith who’s discovered its roots in the ancient Kalguuran civilization. After Farrow is saved from an undead assault, he teaches players how to create powerful items by etching symbols onto Ezomyte Remnants – the art of Runesmithing.
Remnants are combinations of existing and chosen symbols that dictate what items can be made. Players can mix runes to create everything from simple money to powerful, customizable runes with unique abilities. But this crafting power isn’t free – it comes with a price.
As a huge fan, I’ve found that activating a Remnant is seriously cool – it brings nearby undead back to life, but they get a boost based on how you built it! Like, if I use Fire runes when crafting, the undead enemies suddenly have fire attacks. But it’s not always straightforward power – Moon runes bring down lunar beams from the sky, which can be pretty dangerous! It’s a really neat system where the more powerful you make a Remnant, the harder the fight gets, which keeps things interesting and makes every crafting choice matter.
Once you defeat the enemies guarding a Remnant, you can take the item you’ve crafted by destroying it. As you play, you’ll find tougher Remnants with more spaces for runes, letting you create even more powerful items. However, these harder Remnants also mean facing more challenging battles with stronger waves of enemies.
As players advance in the game, they learn that the art of Ezomyte Runesmithing comes from the ancient Kalguurans. These people used Verisium, a powerful metal, to alter reality by inscribing runes. Players can gather Verisium to unlock Runic Ward, a new resource that functions like an extra layer of health and powers up strong runic abilities.
Kalguuran magic brings a fresh approach to skills, replacing mana with a system called Runic Ward. This allows players to learn abilities regardless of their class and combine them with existing skills for powerful new effects. Players can also craft over 100 new runes, including special ones that let you change an item’s elements, improve its quality, or even temporarily add new properties.
These combined features greatly enhance building and crafting options, allowing for extensive experimentation and the creation of powerful new designs.
Uncover Ancient Secrets in The Fortress
Okay, so Wraeclast is totally wrecked after some huge disaster, and this awful corruption from something called the Beast is spreading everywhere. Luckily, this Vaal woman named Doryani is helping me try to find the Precursors – these ancient beings who made something called the Third Edict. Basically, we’re hoping they have some answers about how to save this dying world. It’s a long shot, but it’s all we’ve got!
We’ve revamped the Atlas into a complete endgame area you can explore. It now features set goals in all directions, giving you clear places to go and things to achieve. Towers still play a key role in uncovering what’s ahead.
When you first try to reach the towers, a massive fortress suddenly rises from the ground. This fortress was awakened by an old system triggered by the damage caused by the Beast. To stop the spread of corruption, you must explore the fortress, power up its gates, find the keys to its powerful ancient weapons, and then disable those weapons.
This stronghold kicks off a series of new, challenging storylines coming to Return of the Ancients. Players will face dangerous new foes, rebuild lost technology, discover hidden lore, and experience unique map features and rewards. Expect intense chases by Azmeri spirits, rare monsters tied to powerful essences, and entire areas redesigned as obstacle courses filled with valuable strongboxes.
Now, reaching each endgame boss—including the returning Arbiter of Ash—is much easier. Each boss has its own questline, so you won’t have to rely on luck to get access for the first time.
Awaken new heights of power through the Atlas Tree and the guidance of the Atlas Masters
We’ve completely revamped the Atlas passive tree. Now, by completing maps within the Fortress, players can unlock every single node. Many of these nodes now give you real choices, letting you customize how you play the endgame without constantly having to change your build.
In addition to the Atlas tree, a new feature called Masters of the Atlas adds a progression system similar to the Ascendancy classes. Players choose to follow different Masters – like Jado of the Order of the Djinn or the monster hunter Hilda – each of whom provides unique benefits that can significantly change how your character plays. You can switch between these Masters whenever you want, even between maps, letting you customize your build on the fly.
Reshaped Endgame Storylines and Encounters
The four leagues previously available during Early Access – Delirium, Breach, Ritual, and Expedition – have been updated with new stories, unique crafting options, and more detailed gameplay. Each league now has a permanent place on the Atlas map with its own dedicated progression system.
I’m so excited about the Delirium update! It looks like they’ve completely overhauled the fog, and now you can actually see how deep it is, which is a huge help. Plus, there are new mirror shard encounters and this cool new thing called Distilled Emotions. Apparently, you can use these to craft mods directly onto your jewels – that’s going to be a game changer! And the story culminates in a showdown with Tangmazu, the Raven Trickster, which sounds awesome.
The further you progress, the more unusual encounters you’ll face – like magical mirror pieces that change your enemies or create difficult, but rewarding, survival situations.
The fight against the Hiveborn continues. Ailith and the Keepers of Flame, monks who have long protected the world from this invasion, are struggling to hold the line. Their forces are dwindling while the Hiveborn grow stronger, so Ailith is asking for reinforcements.
When you encounter a Breach now, you’ll see a timer showing how long it will stay open, and how killing enemies adds to that time. If a Breach stays open long enough, it becomes enraged, spawning stronger enemies that must be defeated before the Breach closes. Defeating Hiveborn now also rewards Wombgifts, which can be used to enhance the Genesis Tree – a powerful crafting system that lets you customize jewelry with new abilities, especially beneficial for players who focus on spells or summoning creatures.
Once you finish your first high-level Ritual, you’ll meet Aoife, a spirit who will guide you to the Wildwood, which is now found on the Atlas map. She explains she’s trapped by the King in the Mists and needs your assistance. To help her, you’ll need to prove yourself to the King by completing increasingly difficult Ritual challenges – these challenges will only feature Unique enemies or Omens.
Deep beneath the Wildwood lies a forgotten prison. Within it, the King in the Mists gains strength from a sinister being called the Bodach. To defeat them, a hero without a name must venture into this prison, beginning the Rite of the Nameless. This is a challenging ritual that spans multiple areas, with each battle becoming harder and the rewards changing depending on the path you take through the Atlas.
Okay, so Kingsmarch is totally wrecked after something happened with the Runes of Aldur. Rog’s shop is gone, but he’s way more worried about his wife, Gwennen – she’s disappeared! I’m launching an expedition to find her, and it’s gonna be a big one. We’ll be using logbooks to send ships out across this huge, randomly generated ocean. Apparently, there are tons of new islands to discover, secret stuff happening, and some really tough vault bosses to fight. Sounds intense!
Venture further into the ocean and you’ll discover special island happenings, secret encounters, and challenging bosses like Medved and Uhtred. Defeating them will unveil a strange and powerful energy source within a Verisium meteor. To prepare for this threat, you’ll need to find lost Kalguuran artifacts by exploring a vast world where your choices matter, facing increasingly difficult dangers, uncovering secrets, and earning valuable rewards.
Tame beasts with the Spirit Walker and unleash illusions with the Martial Artist
Discover the Spirit Walker, a new class for the Huntress! She connects with the powerful spirits of Azmeria – the Stag, Owl, and Bear – to gain incredible abilities. By focusing on different spirit types, you can unleash devastating attacks like summoning a stampede, boosting your projectiles, or fighting with a bear companion. You can specialize in a single spirit or combine all three to unlock the full potential of the Sacred Wisps and improve all your skills. The Spirit Walker can also use Idolatry to gain huge bonuses from special items, making minion-based builds even stronger. Plus, you can even tame powerful beast bosses like the Mighty Silverfist and Rakkar, turning them into allies!
Become a master of deception and spiritual power with the new Martial Artist class! Create illusory copies of your attacks, summon ringing spirit bells to damage foes, and amplify your critical hits with powerful resonance. Enhance your defenses by hardening your body like stone, and use runic tattoos to directly empower yourself with magical runes. Finally, achieve true mastery with the Stonefist Way, turning your gloves into incredibly powerful weapons and opening up a huge range of unique combat styles.
Challenge System, Items, and Quality of Life
The «Return of the Ancients» update introduces Challenges to Path of Exile 2. Completing all eight challenges rewards players with pieces of the Knight of Aldur armor set. Other players can see your progress through in-game chat and a special statue you can display in your hideout.
This update adds over 40 new and unique items, including weapons, jewelry, and armor. For example, the ‘Raven’s Flock’ item summons a circle of ravens around the player, damaging nearby enemies over time. Against tougher enemies, the flock grows larger, creating a powerful effect. We’ve also introduced the ‘Liminal Coil,’ a new wand that boosts Physical and Chaos Damage based on the number of cursed enemies nearby. It also unlocks ‘Coiling Bolts,’ a powerful spell that splits and chains between cursed enemies, creating a devastating barrage of projectiles.
We’ve added several features to improve your experience, including easier navigation with landmarks and trails, a searchable Atlas map, and a new in-game Build Guide system. This system lets creators share their builds—including skill trees, gem choices, item suggestions, and level-by-level advice—directly within the game. We’ve also made it easier to sell items: simply hold Shift and Alt while clicking an item to instantly see its current market price.
Road to 1.0 and Beyond
The ‘Return of the Ancients’ update is the last big content addition before ‘Path of Exile 2’ officially launches. After this, the developers will focus on smaller updates to improve balance and fix issues, as well as continue running special in-game events. The full launch is planned for 2026, following the ExileCon event, where all announcements will be available to watch online.
I’m super hyped! Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients is dropping on May 29th! It’ll be available on PC, Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and the Epic Games Store. If I grab one of the Early Access Supporter Packs – starting around $30 – I’ll get access to the new content, including the Return of the Ancients expansion, plus the Bloodreaver and Divinity packs. Can’t wait to dive in!
