Heavy Lunch Studio announced today that their turn-based adventure RPG, Hermit and Pig, will be released on January 22, 2026. A new trailer showcasing gameplay was revealed during the Six One Indie Showcase. Players can look forward to a mushroom-filled adventure starring a solitary hermit and his truffle-hunting pig.

Hermit and Pig is a new take on classic pixel art adventure RPGs. If you enjoy games like Earthbound, you’ll appreciate its funny and charming style, but it also offers some unique gameplay improvements. Instead of relying on repetitive grinding, the combat system focuses on player skill, taking cues from games like Street Fighter and Paper Mario. Players will even experience Hermit’s social anxiety through awkward and humorous conversations with characters, which can be surprisingly uncomfortable — but in a fun way!

Since it was first revealed at the Future of Play Direct in 2023, Hermit and Pig has been showcased at numerous gaming events, including Future Games Show, Day of the Devs, The Mix, Wholesome Games, EGX, Dreamhack, and Magfest.

Game Synopsis:

Hermit and Pig enjoy a peaceful life in the woods, but their quiet is broken when a girl arrives seeking their assistance. The town’s factory unexpectedly fired everyone and replaced them with a suspicious new crew. Hermit and Pig set off on a quest to find a legendary, giant mushroom that could prevent the town from going hungry, unaware that others may also be searching for it.

Step outside what’s familiar! Embark on a strange journey to find a legendary, oversized mushroom, but be prepared for trouble. You’ll face challenges like suspicious corporate types, bizarre cults, competing hunters, and surprisingly aggressive wildlife along the way.

As a fan, I’m really excited about the combat in this game! It’s super intense because you’re always up against the clock. You have to quickly enter special button combinations to attack, and the attacks get harder and more complicated as you play, which keeps things fresh and challenging.

Talk to the people you meet! Uncover secrets by having uneasy conversations with a quirky group of characters. Try not to get embarrassed, and improve your social skills as you deal with the main character’s social anxiety.

Go mushroom hunting and discover a wide variety of fungi — some are realistic, others are fantastical! You can use these mushrooms to heal yourself, treat illnesses, inflict damage on enemies, and even cause special effects. Valuable truffles can be used as money, and you can keep a record of all your finds in a handy field guide.
